Bodega Pastures Sheep

Our flock ranges free on the Northern California coastal prairie. Our sheep eat grasses, clover, and forbs. The sheep drink spring water which flows from high on our ridges. At our midwinter lambing we supplement our ewes' feed with hay which is grown on our ridge spines and bottom fields. Around the time of birth, we also feed our sheep organic alfalfa hay from California and Oregon, according to the ewes' and lambs' needs.

Columbias, Corriedales, Romney and many other breeds are represented in our flock. Our wool comes in a variety of natural colors, and is sorted by color during shearing.

Sustainable Ranching

We are understocked and do not overgraze our range. We rotate our flock to avoid damage to land as well as to avoid predators. We do not spray our fields for weed control nor do we dip our sheep for parasites. We do not inject our sheep with hormones to increase their rate of grain or to make them breed out of season. We do not routinely give our sheep medication of any kind. Instead we practice natural, ecological, ethical, sustainable ranching.

Fleece, Yarn, Batting, Futons, Building Insulation

We make or have made a wide range of organic wool products from our sheep. We hand spin or have machine spun yarn. In conjunction with other producers, we make sliver, batts, and futons for home furnishings. We can produce woolen insulation for nontoxic home construction.

For large orders we offer substantial quantity discounts. However please keep in mind the natural wool cycle when placing orders. We shear in May and market through early fall. We sell most of our wool during this window of time; during most of year, we do have spinning quality fleeces and smaller quantities of custom products available.

All our woolen goods are especially well suited for the environmentally sensitive. However, anyone who wants to live a natural life with less toxins will appreciate our fine fleece.

LAMBS!

Here is a chance to buy grassfed lambs direct from the grower. Many people are surprised to find that lamb raised on the range is affordable when they buy direct. What’s more, our minimum amount (a 20-25 lb half a lamb) fits fine in the freezer compartment of their refrigerator. And it can be cut exactly as they want.
If you eat meat, you may be concerned that the animals have a good life. Our sheep live on pasture, eating grass and drinking spring water. They are not confined.
You may have heard the health advantages of grassfed meat: “Compared with grainfed meat, grassfed meat has as much as four times more vitamin E, five times more cancer-fighting CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), three times more heart friendly omega-3s, and twice as much betacarotene. It is also lower in calories, total fat, and saturated fat.” (Jo Robinson, eatwild.com.)
There are no synthetic hormones or antibiotics to worry about, no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers on the fields.
We farm ecologically; we do not overstock our land and we have fenced our sheep out of our creeks and shift them often from one grazing area to another, to maintain healthy pastures.
So what’s the deal? We sell you a lamb, or by sharing with another customer half a lamb, at $1.25 per lb. live weight. This is equivalent to about $2.50 per lb. of meat.
The butcher we have often worked with follows cutting instructions or has a list of options. You pick up the meat frozen from his store in Penngrove. For slaughtering and butchering, you pay him $51 minimum for one sheep or $29 for a half (plus 45c per lb. for weight over 60lb.)
You may also order a lamb to roast whole and have no cutting costs, only the slaughter charge of $18.
